and eat. and think when you are eating: soil, earth, worm, rain, sun, sky, think of the common ground that unites us all, in hard economic times or no.
We shall not cease from exploring
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.

eat
Okay so some of you know that my writing has slacked off a bit lately because of the farm, meaning, Common Ground--Eat Local, Live Global. I am the head farmer ma'am and if you know farming you know that means this time of year I am up to my eyeballs in seeds, seeds, irrigation details etc etc, and oh yes seeds. And all that math I was not inclined towards back in the day of Mrs. Faye Flye and the seventh grade. We are a new farm so that means starting from the ground up literally: where we are farming has not been cultivated in many years. A long time ago and once upon a time it was an alfalfa field, then just gopher world until now. Now we are approximately one acre of four foot wide beds and as of today, a brand new irrigation system put in by an amazing assembly of volunteers, like a barn raising only in this case, a pipe laying. So we are starting this wee farm because there is a need, for food, for people to eat and know that the fingerling potato that tastes incredible, more potato than they have known a potato could be, is from soil lovingly and sustainably tended...say what? well soil is alive and when it is cared for it can grow a world of amazing things. Oh and there is a need for affordable organic food not just wholefoods/wholepaycheck kind of glitzy superstar vegies that are sexy, yes, but are french filet beans at $10.00 a pound really the point? now remember I am a farmer and I know, I KNOW to the very core of my body, the toil, sweat, hard work etc etc we do to grow good food. I'm not saying the ye olde farmer should not get her due. What I am saying is that great organic food should be within the reach of all of us and so! Common Ground is creating jobs for local new american friends from Bhutan and Burma and places where food is food and food is life. Okay the soap box is getting wobbly. Come see us, grab a shovel, make your body ache and later this summer come eat. In the meantime check out www.oneworldeverybodyeats.com because those folks are defying the odds and changing the world one forkful at a time.
